So guess who called last Wednesday? Think big... think retailer...
Yep, so I'm working on a project for them. They have made throwing their weight around into an art-form. People make life changes at their whim, every single day.
In the past, when I've done these sorts of things for them, I am always grateful to get the opportunity to do something new and interesting. Well, this time.. not so much. Guess what? It's not new, and it's not interesting. It's only fast and dirty work... and it had better be done yesterday. Also, when I have done this in the past I've had the help of some great people who lead the way and forge forward taking the necessary initiative and dealing with the client directly, while I do the amazing behind the scenes work that makes everyone very happy. This time... well, with Wes having just quit (again) last week, and John pursiuing other opportunites as of 10 months ago... it's just me. Sure I have great people working with me... I couldn't do any of this without them, but at the end of the day, if the project fails, its because of something that I did or did not do. I am, by far, the most experienced person on the team... which is fine, but it makes me nervous and cranky and stressed out. And everybody is looking at me for direction. It's almost like... like... I'm a manager or something. I'm not pleased with the situation, but I think I can make it work. Plus there is talk about bringing another guy in as manager. He's a great guy, but doesn't have the technical background that Wes had, or the no-bs experience that John had.
The next few months are going to be very interesting.
So, how many hours have I worked these past two weeks (the payperiod doesn't end until Sunday...its only thursday). 130 hours as of the end of the day today. And that is WITH taking last Thursday almost completely off, and Friday yet to come. This isn't quite the same as the 176 hours I did in a pay period last time this client needed a project... but I have a feeling I'm, once again, going to be added to the top 100 list of all time most hours worked in a single pay period. I'll run a report quick (yeah, I'm a dork) to show you me on the list of top 100 most hours worked in a pay period: #1 with 174.75, #27 with 146.00 and #71 with 134.5. I'm going to work on Saturday, too, to try to get a jump on some of the stuff for monday. It should put add me to somewhere in the 40s or 50s with this week.
Sleep...ah, it sounds like a dream.

Josh,
Hang in there! My boss said (behind my back), it's time to sink or swim. A year later, they said "you swam, so great job!" Then I got a piece of plastic award with no monetary value or benefits whatsoever. But...the head hunters are calling, so HANG IN THERE!
Heather
PS. Friday is Hawaiian shirt day.
